Today we decided to be adventurous and ride up to Webster Pass. It’s a really rough dirt “road” that goes up to 12,103 feet and crossed the Continental Divide. The last mile or so has a sign that says full size cars not allowed. It’s that narrow and precipitous.
Colorado got a lot of snow this winter…a lot! So the pass is still covered by a giant wall of snow and closed to vehicles which I assume are just quads and those side by sides. We were able to ride up within 30 feet of the top and gingerly side step around the snowbank down the muddy hillside and make it to the pass but it felt pretty dangerous.
The ride was tough! It climbed and climbed, sometimes through streams running down the road, sometimes through rocky jumbled sections. The colors were rich. Greens, reds, blues… nothing but the finest on display.
Do you think this road would be doable on a gravel bike?
Which side of the road did you start on?

It’s tough to remember, that being 2 years ago, but I’d say it would be challenging on a gravel bike. Mountain bike would be a better choice.
