Questa to San Cristobal is a mostly gravel loop that requires mountain bikes. We rode 28 miles with 3865′ climbing. The loop goes up into the mountains behind Questa, NM on some NEVER used doubletrack before dropping down into the interesting local of San Cristobal.
The ride starts at Eagle Rock Lake in Questa which is a cool fishing spot. We pedaled through the residential area before turning up into the mountain. This first part was extremely steep and loose! It finally leveled off a bit and we could gaze down at the town below. We got off track at one point and had to backtrack before finding a VERY slight rocky trail that took us down and along a ravine into the outskirts of San Cristobal.
Bombing down the good gravel road into San Cristobal was fast. We passed some interesting funky houses, teepees, artsy compounds and not a whole lot more. With the decent over, we hung a right on a forest service road and headed back up, up, up into the forest. It got pretty hot at this point and were happy to finally reach the looong decent back into Questa. This isn’t a ride I’d ever do often, but the gravel return route from San Cristobal could be built upon for a great ride.
