There are a lot of hikes to choose from in the area we are boondocking. Derek and I picked to hike the Three Sisters Summit one day and off we went. We picked this hike because it is hard enough that not many people do it. It was 6.9 miles with 2503′ of climbing.
The start of this hike is underwhelming for the first .8 miles as you’re just walking up a wide dirt road. Once we turned off onto Carney Springs Trail the trail narrowed and got rocky. Pretty soon the relentless climb started. The hike up to Carney Springs Saddle is a steady climb, with some pretty narrow rock chutes you have to scurry up. At the first saddle we took a bunch of pictures and admired the view. After the recent rains, we were treated to the sound of water cascading down the side of the rocky cliffs.
The next saddle is where we picked up the Ridgeline Trail for a slow going rocky traverse that looked down onto a stream. The trail was wet and muddy in places and it got a bit chilly up here. Fast forward, there is a bit of a downhill and then you climb more to the summit. There is an insane amount of giant rocks everywhere you look and the view is astonishing. We both hate hiking downhill but that’s inevitable so back we went.
This hike was pretty tough but worth it for the solitude and scenery. If we were into backpacking, this would be a wicked sweet place to catch a sunrise or sunset.
