After taking a day off we picked a longer hike on the other side of the park to tackle. Our hike was 9.2 miles with a whole lot of slow going boulder scrambling at the turn around point. We hiked out to Willow Hole which is a giant willow tree that is nestled in towering boulders. The tree itself was underwhelming but the wonderland of rocks all around was quite impressive.
The hike out on Boyscout Trail is pretty tame as you wander along past all the rock climbing spots that branch off. We started before 9 am and had the trail to ourselves. After we branched off onto the Willow Hole Trail we could start to see all the massive granite boulder mountains everywhere. It’s slow going in some of the wash sections but what have we got but time?
After skirting the giant willow tree we headed up onto all the boulders to explore. This part was very cool. There isn’t a trail at all, you are just going wherever you want, climbing onto all the rocks and taking in the views. We got pretty far back in and stopped on an overlook to eat our sandwiches before poking around some more and heading back. Even if you don’t get all the way out to the Willow Hole, this hike is worth it for the scenery leading up to it and I’d highly recommend it.
