We couldn’t stay away so we headed back into Valley of Fire State Park for a second day of hiking. Check out my post on our first day here. This time we hiked 6 miles, though it felt like more since it is slow going. We covered all the favorite picture spots and then found our own! This place hides so many treasures that require you to just get off the beaten path and wander.
This was a special occasion so we set the alarm to get up early and beat the crowds. Success! We were able to take our time and see everything without people around. We marveled at all the dazzling stripes of colors in the Fire Wave and on some other rock slabs we found wandering around. Yellow, white, ride, and pink swirls splash across the landscape.
Arches. Little arches, big arches, elephant shaped rocks, sharktooth shaped rocks…you name it and it’s out here. Half the fun of places like this is just picking a direction and climbing the rocks to get there. True adventure! We got lucky and it was a treat to find a whole herd of bighorn sheep tucked in a canyon. There were even two little babies though I don’t know if they will show well in the pictures. They sure have a beautiful home!
Our digital camera (yes we still have an actual camera), is starting to fail. When you press the on button it sometimes actually turns on. This thing has been a true champ and served us faithfully for so many years but Derek just broke down and ordered a new one. We might need to hold a memorial ceremony for this old one.
Next we are headed into the backcountry where we will not have internet so expect a lapse in posts.
