I bet most people haven’t heard of Goblin Valley State Park in Utah but it’s worth a stop if you’re in the area of Hanksville. The entry fee of $20 gets you two days in the park and it isn’t very big so that’s enough to see a lot.
Goblin Valley State Park is a showcase of geologic history. Exposed cliffs reveal parallel layers of rock bared by erosion. Because of the uneven hardness of sandstone, some patches resist erosion much better than others. The softer material is removed by wind and water, leaving thousands of unique, geologic goblins. Water erosion and the smoothing action of windblown dust work together to shape the goblins.
Our first day in the park we hiked around in the goblins for a few hours. There aren’t any real trails, you just wander around and climb into different canyons…what I call freehiking. We spent about three hours hiking around to see the goblins.
