Horseshoe Meadows Ride

The internet claims Horseshoe Meadows is the second hardest climb in all of California so we gave it a shot. We’re camped very close by so it was easy to access. We rode our gravel bikes 22 miles and climbed 4,356′ up to the highpoint of 9,608′! The ride kept going for a another mile or two but with temps dropping, we opted to turn around and head back.

We weren’t looking to set any records, just ride a slow steady pace all the way up and take in the amazing views. We must have stopped over a dozen times to take pictures. The climb up starts with really long traverses and 6 hairpin turns. The climb is pretty much steady the whole way up with little to no flat sections. The views of Owens Valley are spectacular and you get a good glimpse of the infamous Owens Lake. Or at least, what’s left of it.

Owens Lake held significant water until 1913, when much of the Owens River was diverted into the Los Angeles Aqueduct, causing Owens Lake to desiccate by 1926. A 2004 court order required the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to reestablish a small flow from the river into the lake, nevertheless, it is the biggest sources of dust pollution in the United States.

After the hairpin turns the road is more winding and the rocks get very interesting. Since it’s late season and high elevation up here, the road was pretty quiet. I think about 5 cars passed us the whole ride. I’d say this ride is definitely worth it if you have the fitness. If not you can always ride part of it and just turn around when you want. It’s all downhill on the way back. Alternatively, drive up here and hike around. The list of peaks you can climb to is long and there are a plethora of trails. Just keep in mind it all closes in November when the snow falls.
