After spending winter in Arizona, we are now in Silver City, NM. We came through here a couple years ago and really liked the forest and recreational opportunities. Boondocking outside town at around 6000′ we are still getting some chilly nights but at least it isn’t snowing/raining/tornadoing like other parts of the country. The thing about the southwest in spring is the wind. We have experienced some pretty hefty gusts on and off so we structure our days accordingly. Oh, and don’t ever leave the awning up unattended. We learned that lesson with our previous trailer over a decade ago. We accidentally left the awning up while we went for a ride and let’s just say it had rearranged itself in a creative way by the time we got back.
A couple times now, Derek has ridden west out the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) towards Lordsburg. We rode this trail a few times last time we were here and really liked it. The trail isn’t too technical with lots of winding turns in and out of canyons and dipping across washes. There aren’t any miles long climbs, just intermittent ups and downs. Vegetation is largely oak, cacti, juniper and pine for the most part. The sign says bear are in the area but so far I’ve only seen a fox, lots of jackrabbits, and some cows.
We’re planning a trip into town to check out the brewery so stay tuned!
