A few miles from our boondocking spot is a fun little hiking loop called Purgatory Chasm. After Derek’s big ride the day before we were looking for something easy and quick. The hike itself is less than 2 miles but it took us an hour due to some route finding, exploring, and meandering. Oh, and picture taking.
The trail starts in the ponderosa and juniper forest and a sign warns of flash flooding. The highlight of the hike is the chasm, or canyon that could be deadly in a flash flood. It was pretty dry when we hiked with just a trickle of water in places. We went to the right at the Y and that seems like the better direction because the climb is gentle and then wraps around into the canyon where you are treated to high canyon walls, what would be swimming holes and waterfalls in times of water, and lots of interesting views.
If you’re looking for something fun and easy, this is it.
