Opened in 1963, 69-acre Lake Roberts, about one hour’s drive north of Silver City. We are boondocking a few miles from Lake Roberts in the Gila National Forest and took a quick and chilly morning hike around the lake one day. It’s a fishing lake, in fact signs warn there is no swimming or wading allowed. We parked at the Lake Roberts Picnic Area and set off on our adventure.
I call it an adventure because there isn’t an official route all the way around the lake. AllTrails showed a North Lake Trail and a South Lake Trail but the two didn’t connect. We had two places to negotiate in order to link the two. First up was finding a way around the east end. It was mushy and we had to cross streams several times but we made it over to the campground. From here we picked up the trail as it wound along the shore. In a couple spots we had to scramble up rock ledges and route.
Our next unknown was finding a way around the dam. Really, it’s a spillway so we had to hike past it around to the spillover side and cross the runoff before hiking up the rocky side of the dam. Mission accomplished! We hooked up with the next section of trail that winds past a lot of little fishing spots. The lake is stocked with trout and bass and seemed to be a pretty popular spot.
We had no problem completing the loop and finished with a picnic. Another success.
