The new Black Goat trail in Dolores, CO means that you can now ride McPhee Overlook loop mostly on single track. The only section that isn’t trail is a short section of road through town. We picked a great day to ride this and had a blast.
I couldn’t find much info, but The Black Goat seems to have existed years ago and lived on the mountain above town. He disappeared back in 2013 and there is now a beer and a trail named for him. Mysterious. The trail is a great climb up out of town and connects with the Boggy Draw trail system. We rode it all the way to Bean Canyon and then descended that. I love Bean Canyon. It’s fast, interesting and shady.
After connecting with the Overlook Trail, we rode that all they way around into town. Again, really fun trail and interesting. The arms of the McPhee Reservoir reach in and out of coves and the trail runs high above with some climbs and descents winding around. Very fun day.
