Mesa Verde National Park is one of the lesser visited parks in the country and we are fortunate to be able to spend time here. However, I did this hike into Spruce Canyon solo and I was a bit nervous of the bear encounter potential since I only came across a couple other people.
I like this hike because you get down to the canyon floor where it is lush, green, and quiet. It’s such a contrast to the upper cliff hikes where it is dry and rocky. Down here there were big Douglas firs, oak, and a natural wetland area. With plenty of shade, this makes for a good choice on hot days, though you still have to descend in the blazing high altitude sun and then climb back out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this loop.
