Perk Canyon Ride

Another day another ride! Today we rode roughly 6.9 miles with 2444′ of climbing on the Cedar Creek Trails in Ruidoso, mostly different ones from the other day. This time we rode further into the system to add on a loop up Perk Canyon and down Perk Ridge.

The split of Jerryatrics Trail onto Raven’s Ridge leads to more beautiful purpose built mountain bike ridge riding. I did let the bear bell jangle a bit out here because we were all alone and didn’t see anyone up on the ridge.

At the junction with Perk Ridge we headed left. This section down to the canyon is a mixed bag. There are some very steep scree chutes where you just have to get back behind the saddle and hang on for your dear life. Other sections were swoopy through the forest and then there were a series of newly built switchbacks that zig zagged down the mountain. I’d definitely call this black diamond riding. Beginners would be walking A LOT, or crashing.

Down at the bottom we turned right and climbed up Perk Canyon Trail. The first 2 miles or so are beautiful. The climb is gentle enough and the canyon is full of greenery. Then the shit hit the fan. It’s like Jekyll and Hyde. All of a sudden the trail went straight up some rocks and switchbacked up impossible loose and steep terrain that definitely needs some work to fix all the erosion. We had to hike this section. Back at the top, we headed down everything we climbed earlier.

I finished reading the oddest book. It’s called Little and it’s about the life of Madame Tussaud..she’s the wax museum “inventer”. It was interesting and definitely different.
