There are some amazing remote gravel/rock road rides in the Canyonlands area. We rode Elephant Hill Road the other day and I blogged about it here. This time we decided to explore Lockhart Basin Road, the back road to Moab. It’s too long for a single day out and back, in fact it’s often bikepacked. We did an out and back on a section and had a great time exploring.
The beauty of this ride is you ride out and turn around wherever you want. This is a much easier ride than Elephant Hill Road though I’d still bring a mountain bike to the party. There are some rock slab sections in the first 20 miles and plenty of sand that a wider tire handles better. Be ready for remote. There is no cell service really, and the chances of someone coming along are slim. We saw one truck the whole ride.
The road parallels the Colorado River but it’s way off to the left so bring what water you need. We happily pedaled through the desert with towering red cliffs and wide open views. There are plenty of interesting views and wow, it’s quiet out here. When we stopped for lunch our ears were ringing from the silence.
