We left this doozy for the end of our stay in Canyonlands. Big Springs Canyon to Wooden Shoe Canyon loop is one of the longer day hikes in the area and we LOVED it. It’s around 7.5 miles and starts from Campground A in the Needles Campground.
What I liked about this hike is the adventurous remote feeling. The hike doesn’t have a ton of elevation change, but most of it comes in hiking up the sides of rock canyon walls. If you’re afraid of heights this will make you nervous for sure. You hike up one canyon and then wind impossibly UP the canyon wall and descend the other side into the next canyon.
The views on this hike have you gazing out at the unique red rock formations and sheer, towering cliffs. Once you get up and over the back ridge, the hike down the next canyon is fairly easy. The wooden shoe is actually best viewed from the road and we stopped to take pictures of it on the way back to camp.
