On the eastern edge of Redding, close to Whiskeytown Lake, we rode a fantastic loop I’ll call French Fry Loop. The mountain biking in this area is pretty climby with some lovely views of Lassen and a section of the Sacramento River.
Our mountain bike loop started up by the trailhead for Trail 58 off Iron Mtn Rd. There’s only room for a few cars but on a weekday we were the only ones there. French Fry Trail was named after trail builders found some french fry wrappers there. After the climb we dropped down into the Rock Creek Drainage. This trail features some technical rock sections, and tight fast singletrack. A long section follows Rock Creek and some wildflowers were in full bloom.
After wrapping around we crossed the road and connected to Trail 58 and Salt Creek Trails. Trail 58 was a fast flowy jaunt other than the Middle Creek bridge climb. After crossing the bridge Immediately to the west of this bridge is the most difficult section of this trail; it includes steep, chunky rocks and has steep, tight corners that are quite exposed. I really liked this trail and wish it was longer.
Overall the loop was a perfect mix of climbing and descending. We’ll be back!
