Over 30 miles of dirt single-track wind through the hills between Swasey Drive and Muletown Road on the outskirts of Redding. This area offers several trails of varying character and difficulty for cyclists and hikers, from purpose built flow trails to long climbing x-country trails. Some trails follow historic mining ditches while others climb steadily to Mule Mountain Pass before connecting to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
We did a figure eight route that covered a lot of terrain. Escalator Trail is the climb up and this long, flowy route climbs through beautiful meadows and across rocky hillsides. At the top of Black Bear Pass we headed down Mule Ridge and did a loop out K’ulu:l Trail and back up Igo Trail. Igo was pretty darn steep in spots! All of these trails are very well laid out and fun to ride.
After the climb back up to the pass, we headed down Smooth Snail Trail. This is a fast flow trail with many berms and rollers. There aren’t any drops so every skill level could do it, some just at more speed! A series of shorter trails got us back to our car.
There are a lot of trails out here so you’ll need Trailforks to find your way. There are so many more trails to check out in this area so we’ll be back for sure.
