Sidewinder Trail
We attempted a Mountain bike loop in the Gunnison Gorge outside Montrose but failed. It started out on a 4WD rocky and loose jeep road that climbed and climbed. Hell, it was 2.9 miles and 1350′ climbing. Relentless really. Once up on the ridge we did have great views but so much sweat was dripping in my eyes I could barely see the views. The singletrack is also a motorcycle route so it was loose and rocky and a bit chewed up.
We turned on Redrocks Nighthorse Trail and rode along the ridge for a ways…it got hotter. At this point we decided to cut the ride short since it was already 88 degrees with no shade. After checking out the Sidewinder Trail, we bailed to the gravel road back to our truck. 12 miles and not much excitement about the trails.
The Whole Uncolada/Lower Spring Creek
With a forecast of thunderstorms and rain we hurried to get a ride in today. After a quick cup of coffee and some cold cereal, we geared up and left. To maximize the downhill time, we road up a gravel road 6 miles and hit the singletrack down. This trail was a blast! It was rocky, tight and twisty. We took a side trail that switchbacked down to the actual spring creek and then climbed back up to finish our trail. Fun stuff! Part of what we rode is a small chunk of a trail route called the Whole Uncolada. To do the whole thing requires a shuttle or a long day in the saddle to do it as a loop. The Whole Uncolada is 20.5 miles long with almost 4,000′ feet of descending. Maybe next time.
