Deep Creek Loop
Our first ride in Telluride was Deep Creek Loop. 18 miles and 2,861′ climbing. It only took us a couple hours and it was a good thing because the weather wasn’t great. I actually wore my rain coat most of the ride.
We started off by riding the bike path out of town, then up a steep road towards the airport. We picked up the Aldasaro Trail and then one called Penelope’s Cruise before hooking in to Deep Creek Trail. This is when the climbing got steep and technical with some hiking. This trail is highly scenic with expansive views of Telluride and surrounding mountains.
With most of the climbing over, the downhill was rewarding. Views of Mt. Sneffels, tight tree riding, steep switchbacks, roots, drops, water crossings, and dark forests made the climbs worth it. We ended with a fast descent down Mill Creek.
We’re camped up at 10,200′ which, I believe, is our highest yet! I had to dig out my beanie for coffee outside in the mornings.
Scotch Creek Loop
Just down the road past Rico, CO we rode a fun loop called Scotch Creek Loop. We’re still in climbing country. This loop was 19.5 miles with 3,254′ of climbing.
Scotch Creek is a rugged, steady 6.5 mile climb up to the Colorado Trail. We then rode the CT across to Salt Creek Trail. This section of the Colorado Trail traverses the side of mountains with great views of the San Juan Mountains.
Salt Creek Trail is aggressive. It’s a more primitive trail with incredibly steep sections that descends all the way down to the Delores River. You’re cliffside in several parts and this is definitely an advanced trail. SO FUN!!
