Last fall when we were in this area we found this great local loop. It would be nice if there was singletrack at the bottom of Starvation Creek Trail but hey, first world problems, right? Our ride was 17 miles with 2297′ of climbing topping out at around 10,045′.
Not to be outdone by all our other climby days, this loop starts with a 2000′ climb for the first 7 miles. It’s never very steep and the flora changes the higher up you get. At the top are giant aspen trees and then even a pine forest. These aren’t the spindly little aspens, they were giant! Again we had to negotiate a stream crossing and one small snow and mud section before continuing on a really fun descent. The trail is twisty and narrow through aspens and in and out of green meadows. This time when we reached Starvation Creek Trail we turned right and continued down. The trail enters drier terrain and the descent continues.
I was sad to be done with the singletrack, but we spun back along the old railroad grade back to the start. This is the section where I wish there was singletrack. The railroad grade isn’t anything special, though you do get nice views of the farm and ranches down in the valley.
