Pronghorn is a fantastic singletrack loop right in Del Norte, CO. The trail was purpose built for mountain biking in 2016 and they did a brilliant job. The area has a mix of rock features, canyons, and big vistas of San Francisco Creek, the San Luis Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. We rode two loops of it; once clockwise and once counterclockwise. The ride was 16.4 miles with 2004′ of climbing and I’d consider it intermediate.
Right out of the lot we began climbing and the first part winds up onto the buttes through a bunch of interesting rock features. The trail has plenty of rock sections to keep things interesting and challenging. I say it’s an intermediate difficulty trail but intermediate riders will definitely be challenged. The loop has three main climbs, the first being the longest, and then you’re treated to a fun descent, climb again, another fun decent, climb, and then a descent to end the loop.
We were both very impressed and wish there were more options out there, but we were happy to turn around and ride it the other direction. We both agree (I think), that counterclockwise was better. Either way you won’t be disappointed. All that riding and we didn’t see another person. Amazing.
