Our planned ride for the day was a bust. We couldn’t find a connecting trail through an overgrown mountainside with downed trees EVERYWHERE. Back at the car and 7.5 miles with 1000′ of climbing in, we decided to try some trails in one of the canyons above Los Alamos. So, we tacked on another 13 miles and 1755′ of climbing.
We rode out a forest road to the Water Canyon Trail. This singletrack drops down into the canyon on a very narrow trail that hugs the wall. At the bottom we took the Perimeter Trail up to American Springs Road and climbed. The word road is in the name, but it’s in name only. It’s a technical doubletrack that climbs up to the American Springs Loop.
American Springs Loop was a blast. It has a lot of rocky slab sections to negotiate, some fast flowy sections, and then there are the canyon rim parts with views down into the deep depths of treed and rock wonders. I was amazed that we didn’t see any other cyclists this whole day because the trails are very fun!
