We ducked out of Utah for a while and are just across the border in Green River, Wyoming. Our new primitive spot sits up above town at about 7200′ and is nice and quiet. Our last couple weeks were up in the Ashley National Forest among trees but there aren’t any up here. Green River is drier with lots of sage, grasses, and wildflowers.
Our first day we mountain biked at Wilkins Peak Trail System which has about 30 miles of mountain bike trails. We rode the outer trails Brent & Mikes, Pick Your Poison, Nomojo, and Don’t Chute. The ride was 14 miles with about 1500′ of climbing.
Brent & Mikes Trail is a nice rolling singletrack that hugs the side of the ridge. There are some rock ledges and shelves, a handful of ladders, and a whole lot of fun. Pick Your Poison is rated black diamond but it’s more like solid intermediate with spots of advanced. There are nice choose your own adventure spots for all the technical sections and we always picked the most technical way and had a blast.
Nonmojo Trail continues with amazing views of the Green River and some beautiful deep canyon riding. This trail is fast and flowy with little dips and climbs as you wrap around arms of the canyon. Some sections have a bit of exposure but nothing extreme. Once again, Trailforks App was our friend as it’s a bit of a maze out here.
It was a hot day out here but at camp up over 1000′ from town, the evenings are perfect.
