What an outstanding ride! Back in 2015 Derek and I shuttled this with our friends Kevin, Dave, and Cinda. Without them here, we rode it as an out and back this time. Much harder! Our ride was 22 miles of singletrack canyon and rocky bliss.
This section starts off rather tame with some rolling trail through the foothills of the Black Canyon. Climbing gently, we headed up into the rocks and wound around before dipping down to cross the “road” by Bumble Bee Ranch Adventures and climb out the other side. This next section was my favorite. It’s tight and rocky as it winds around the edge of the mountain and into the canyon. It’s rated intermediate and that’s probably fair. But if you are skittish at all about riding rocky stuff with dropoffs on the side, be warned. The penalty of a crash could be severe.
The views along this section are rather stunning. looking out towards Castle Creek Wilderness and Horsethief Basin Recreation Area. We didn’t see any rattlesnakes on the trail, but we did crest a hill and hit one in the middle of the road with our truck. The crows were thrilled.
After the ride we stopped at Cleator Bar and Yacht Club for a cold beer. This place is pretty unique out here in the middle of nowhere. The motive is water things..jet skis, boats, pirate ships, and surf boards. If only there were water out here.
