Stopped by snow heading west the other day, this time we rode into town along the Bizz Johnson Rail Trail. Our plan was to take the South Side singletrack one way and the rail trail back. That plan was derailed (haha) when we found the bridge out crossing Susan River right by the Devil’s Corral Trailhead. Instead we rode down the rail trail and connected into the singletrack further down. Our ride was 15 miles with 829′ of climbing.
This entire section into town boasts magnificent views of Susan River, several fun tunnels and lots of trees. The rail trail is mostly gravel and follows a very gentle grade down into Susanville. The singletrack section we rode hugs the rim of the canyon and winds up and down. There weren’t any other users on either trail the weekday we rode it but I imagine is is busier on the weekend.
The Bizz Johnson trail ends/starts at the he historic Susanvillle Railroad Depot. The depot was built by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1927 and still stands as a museum today but it doesn’t open until Memorial Day. We got a picture, chatted with a local about the area, and headed back up the trail.
I highly recommend checking out this rail to trail if you are in the area. It’s great for all levels of riders, runners, walkers since the grade is gentle.
