From camp Derek did an exploratory ride out to Carnero Lake and Green’s Peak. It clocked in at 21.3 miles with 1932′ of climbing up to a high point of 10,132′. I headed across the highway to hike part of the Railroad Grade Trail.
Carnero Lake isn’t much of a lake. It’s quite shallow and shrinks considerably by late summer. There is fishing and camping up there, and hunting of course. As for Green’s Peak, it is an extinct cinder-cone volcano and the road up is rough. If you’re driving it requires high clearance 4×4 but it’s perfect for a bike if a bit steep! You can see the peak from far away, it’s the one with all the communications towers. The ride up was worth the view as you can see.
