Before you get too excited, we didn’t see any Gray wolves. This hike is up in the Dungeness network of the Buckhorn Wilderness and a lesser visited spot than some of the more popular hikes. We have so much time up here we are able to do everything we want so we hit this up on 4th of July weekend.
The drive to get to it is an adventure in itself in that either way you get there is a series of potholed, dirt roads that go deep into the woods. There were only a couple cars when we got there but on the way out there were more.
The trail starts up above the river and descends to where you can get glimpses of it and hear it, but you don’t get to it for a few miles. The meadows at the start are sprinkled with wildflowers this time of year and the shade of the cedars was a welcome.
It’s a tease because you get down right close to the river and then turn inland and head up up up only to descend back to the water. When we finally did get to the river I soaked my feet, we ate our sandwiches and some wild salmonberries, relaxed, and headed back. Round trip is around 7 miles – ends on an uphill.
