The mountains above Vegas got a quick snowfall that really highlighted the colors and textures in the canyons. We hiked a challenging loop out into Red Rock Canyon State Park.
This loop is not maintained and dives directly into the rugged, isolated heart of the Calico Hills requiring hands-on scrambling across the iconic red and buff Aztec Sandstone. The path is a relentless, steep gully that required careful navigation, as cairns are often scarce and the loose footing is notoriously tricky. That all sounds scary but it was rewarding. This can be a busy park since it’s so close to Vegas. This hike allowed us to get away and enjoy the scenery.
