The Lake Isabella and Kernville area of California have a lot of dirt/gravel roads to explore. Right from our boondocking spot we headed out on a great ride. I’m calling it the Keyesville Gravel Ride.
Our route climbed through the Keyesville Special Recreation Area on a short pavement section before hitting dirt and winding up into the hills. This area is popular with off-roaders on the weekends but we were riding on a weekday so we only saw a few. Lake Isabella and the dam came into view as we climbed up and up. You can do this as an out and back for almost as far as you want, or loop it on one of the endless roads out here, or even on the Kern Valley Trail we rode the other day. So many options.
It was a very hot day and while our original plan was to loop it with singletrack, we ended up doing an out and back to cut down the mileage. There isn’t anything out there so bring what you’ll need. A couple remote compounds with signs and fences is all we saw. That, and miles and miles of oak trees and grasses on the hills. There is a fair amount of climbing so be prepared.
