Black Canyon Trail – Arrastri & Soap Creek

We finished off our time in Black Canyon by riding two more sections of the Black Canyon Trail. These two sections weren’t very long thankfully, because it was a warm day. The ride was 15 miles with 1699′ of climbing.

Today we got a late start to riding because a dog wandered up to our boondocking spot. This was odd because there isn’t anyone around for at least 1.5 miles. Luckily Fancy, that was her name, had a collar with a phone number on it so her owner was able to come pick her up. For about 20 minutes we had a very cute dog who liked belly rubs.

Our ride started off I-17 and headed towards Phoenix on more exciting and fun singletrack. The trail itself didn’t have any long climbs as we headed out which is tough because that means all the climbing comes on the way back. These two sections are rated intermediate which is probably true heading south, but climbing back up is a whole nother story. There are loose chunky sections and some steep switchbacks. We opted to ride Maggie Mine gravel/dirt road back to the start to speed it up.

I really liked both of these sections as they wound around the canyons and featured interesting rocks, tons of desert vegetation and big views. We have been impressed with all the sections we rode and I highly recommend people check this trail out.
