McPhee Reservoir in Dolores, Colorado is a magnificent lake fed by Dolores River, with a headwater high up on Lizard Head Pass in Telluride. The singletrack loop we rode starts in downtown Dolores, climbs up onto the mesa via a newish trail called Black Goat, and circles along the reservoir before dropping back down. Fantastic ride!
The riding isn’t incredibly technical except for a couple spots, but there is a good amount of climbing and some pretty narrow tread in spots and in places it is remote. We tackled it on a storm threatening day which made for some dramatic views out over the water.
Dolores has an AWESOME brewery and beer garden but it isn’t open until 4:00 so plan your ride to end later in the day to check it out. We were done much earlier than that so didn’t get to take advantage of it. We did, however, pick up some of their beer at the local liquor store.
