Death Valley is full of ghost towns and mines. We’ve seen a lot of them over our travels through here and this was a repeat from 2019. We parked off the highway and rode mountain bikes up and back to it. It’s a lot of climbing, but the views on the way and at the top are great, and you’re unlikely to see many people.
Chloride City is a historic, remote ghost town in Death Valley National Park, located in the Funeral Mountains at around 4,770′. The City and mine was established in the 1871 by A.J Franklin when he discovered silver at Chloride Cliffs. Unfortunately poor profitability caused abandonment by 1883. The ghost town contains numerous building remains, adits (mine passages), dumps, and the grave of James McKay, of whom nothing is known.
From the cliffs at the top you can see down into Amargosa Valley, and the other way down into the park floor. With the temps hotting up we’re keeping our eyes out for rattlesnakes. So far we’ve seen a few and it’s a good reminder to stay alert.
