Our last ride from camp was a doozy. We rode the Colorado Trail around Twin Lakes to where it crosses Columbine, all the way up Columbine to the tippy top, and back to camp. 36 miles with 4,979′ climbing. Columbine is one of the famous climbs in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race and it’s big!! It tops out at 12,540′ so not only is it steep, it’s at high altitude.
I doubt any of the racers get to stop and look around, or go to the edge of the cliffs and admire the beauty. Too bad, it’s beautiful up there! The road is good gravel at the bottom but the last few miles pitch up quite steeply in spots and become very, very rocky.
We collapsed back at camp and slept well after we stuffed our faces.
