I will venture to bet that not many people reading this blog have been to Las Cruces, NM; though maybe I’m wrong. After leaving Tucson, we drove over to Las Cruces for a week to see what there is to see, and do what there is to do.
Our campspot is back up against the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and is beautiful. The mountains are jagged rock that jut up to 9000′ though our spot is only at 5000′. We are pretty close to a couple of the trails we plan to hike and ride which is very convenient.
Our first full day here we had coffee and basked in the morning sun before getting down to the business of picking our daily activity. We opted for a ride out in Soledad Canyon. However, when we got there, the BLM signboard at the entrance showed that the area was closed to bikes. That’s confusing because the BLM website shows bikes are allowed. Sooooo, plan B. We rode down the hill to the Sierra Vista Trail and did an out and back on that instead. It wasn’t technically difficult, but fun with good views. The ride was 24 miles with 2031′ of climbing. Ocotillo and creosote bushes are everywhere and some care was needed to not end up with thorns in our arms, legs, etc!
