Limekiln to Stone Quarry Trails

Heidi Faller Posted onJune 22, 2020June 22, 2020 Colorado, Del Norte, Mountain Biking 2 Comments 1346 Views

From camp we rode the super fun trails Limekiln and Speedway over to the Stone Quarry trail system. Stone Quarry stretches across canyon and high alpine desert lands with superb views. There, we rode Vision Quest, Window, Monster Slayer and Duran Land before returning the way we came. The day was 23 miles with 2190′ of climbing.

Window and Monster Slayer were my favorites. Like the Penitente Trails the day before, these were more technical, I’d call them intermediate as long as you’re comfortable with rock slabs, drops, ledges, and large boulders. This type of riding is more physically demanding than just pedaling up steep trails in that you are using your whole body to surge up onto rocks and negotiate obstacles, all the while picking good lines and of course admiring the beauty!

A small evening storm blew through and brought a trace amount of rain. I love the smell of rain whether it’s in the forest or in the desert. We seem to be in the exact spot it hardly ever rains because with the wide open views of the surrounding valley, I can watch rain clouds roll around and see the dramatic curtains of downpour they produce be we don’t get much, if any here.
