Just up the highway from Vernal, Utah is a trail network called Red Fleet Trails. These trails are right outside Red Fleet State Park so you don’t have to pay to ride them. There are a few trailheads to access the network from but we started from the main one. About 22 miles of trails wind around and you can loop them all together for a great ride. If you’re in the area I would definitely recommend checking out this trail system.
Starting with Handsome Cabin Boy (that’s the name of the trail!) the loop starts off more technical than the McCoy Flats trails. The terrain is rocky with fun slickrock sections along the rim. J-Boy is another one of the more technical trails out here although I’m not sure it earned the black diamond rating. The rest of the loop is made up of the Jazz Chromolly Trail which is fast, twisty and fun. There are a few short climbs here and there but for the most part this trail is rolling.
If jumps and berms are your thing, then Jumps & Ladders trail will make you small. Everything is well built with official go arounds and nothing is to big. It’s a short trail and is downhill only. To get back up you either ride the road or the Climb Trail. Climb Trail is definitely harder than the road with a bunch of steep ups.
Our 14 days of boondocking here at McCoy Flats is almost over so we’ll move on a bit north for a couple weeks to check out the Flaming Gorge area.
