Even though we are camped right on a trail network, we still spent a few days riding other trails around Vernal. The other day we rode the trails out at Red Fleet and I blogged about it here. This time we drove over to what seemed like an unlikely place for trails to be and rode Corkscrew and Racetrack. This isn’t a destination trail system but if you have an extra day you might ride here. There are really only three trails so not much, but you could do loops if you wanted more mileage.
We started by riding Corkscrew which is the more fun of the two we rode. This trail should be ridden clockwise to take maximum advantage of the fun downhill. The trail starts with a gradual climb through red dirt desert and crosses a dry wash several times before a series of shorter steep climbs up onto a mesa. From here we wound around cliffside and started the fun downhill. This isn’t a total downhill in the traditional sense. It’s a pedaly downhill that is twisty, hence the name “Corkscrew”. It’s fast and flowy but I wouldn’t call it technical.
Back at the start, Racetrack heads out from the other end of the parking lot. This loop trail is beginner friendly and flat out fast. There are no technical sections, it’s just a fun racetrack. There is a third trail called Full Monty that extends off this loop but we skipped it. Combined, the ride was 14.2 miles with 1300′ of climbing so not a huge day, just a nice little jaunt.
