We’re still in Green River, WY and yesterday we hooked different trails together for a 15 mile ride with 1600′ of climbing. A couple of the trails were unsanctioned but they were pretty well established and VERY fun.
Finding the first trail, Kamikaze, was a bit of an adventure. Starting from the Visitor’s Center we rode along the highway frontage road until we found a large drainage pipe running underneath the highway. After a spooky dark hike through the tunnel we popped out by some giant sandstone rock formations and our trail. Kamikaze climbs up through the wash on a very narrow twisty singletrack. As the trail gains elevation it starts to wind up through the hills. It’s only 2.4 miles long, but gains almost 800′ so it’s just steady but not steep. At the top we connected with Bonzai for the descent. Bonzai is a fast flowy trail with narrow sections with exposure and some technical bits. Woohoo!
After negotiating the roads back to town, we connected to Castle Rock Trail. This trail runs along an old irrigation ditch which is cut into the side of the hill with a large rock formation on top known as Castle Rock. It was kind of a cool view to be looking down on town. We pedaled above town and up to the cemetery. This is where our next trail gets it’s name. Better Than Dead was incredibly fun. The trail winds and twists along the bluffs with some small drops here and there. I really liked this trail for the interesting terrain and little challenges.
We finished back at the cemetery and retraced our route on Castle Rock Trail back to the Visitor’s Center. Green River runs right behind the building and we spotted a large eagle with some babies in a nest perched high up above the water. Very cool end to a ride!
