There were a couple things we wanted to do up in the Tony Grove area but the entire road is closed until July 1 so we had to skip the hike to Naomi Peak. We altered Bunchgrass White Pine Lake to be an out and back instead of a loop. Our ride was 17.5 miles with 2468’ of climbing.
Bunchgrass Trail starts right on the highway past Tony Grove Road. The climb up is gradual and steady as you pass through stands of aspen, spruce, and fir. There are continuous great views the entire ride. Towards the middle of Bunchgrass Trail it flattens out and the trail follows the stream along open meadows. The last mile or so to the lake is steep, loose, and rocky but the reward is White Pine Like. The bonus is there were only a few people at the lake since the hike in is longer with the road closure. This breathtaking (it’s cold!) alpine glacial lake is in a beautiful setting of cirque cliffs and high mountains.
After resting, splitting an energy bar and soaking up the views, we headed back down. This is about 7 miles of downhill though there are a few climbs sprinkled in. The trail is incredibly fast and on a weekend I bet there are a lot of other users but we didn’t have to worry about that.
Our two weeks here in Logan Valley are over and we’re moving on but we’re sad to go. It has been a nice quiet, peaceful and beautiful time. But alas, more adventures await us where we go next!
Glad you enjoyed your time here! These are my local mountains.
Lucky! There is some great riding!!!!
