Hiking day! Today we hiked out and back on Alaska Basin Trail. If you go far enough you get to some lakes but we just wanted a couple hours of forest time. Our hike was 7 miles with around 800′ of climbing so very accessible to abilities.
Alaska Basin Trail starts from Treasure Mtn Scout Camp on a fairly wide path through the evergreen forest that soon narrows. Almost immediately we entered Jedediah Smith Wilderness where bikes aren’t allowed, hence, the hiking. South Fork Teton Creek flows alongside the trail the entire way up. It’s incredibly green the whole way with aspens, firs, pine, and wildflowers. There is almost no surface not covered with vegetation! Bees and butterflies buzz and flap everywhere and really it’s an amazing setting.
We turned around after 3.5 miles but the trail keeps going almost forever. This is prime backpacking territory since you can go so far and there are a plethora of water sources.
I realize I never posted an update about our propane issue. For a couple weeks the propane flowing to our stove and oven in the trailer was week. It wasn’t enough to heat the oven past about 250 and we could only use one burner at a time on the stove. This is a problem because Derek cooks all our meals and they aren’t simple top ramen. First we tried buying new propane hoses which in itself was no small feat because we weren’t very near town and didn’t have internet so couldn’t research rv places that might have what we needed. Finally we got the hoses only to get back to camp and find that they had to be mounted on a different size bracket than the one we had. So, back into town to try to find the correct size bracket.
Only, the new hoses didn’t solve the problem. Next try was a new regulator for the propane. Again, back into town to find this part. Luckily this was the solution! We’re back to homemade pizza, biscuits, enchiladas, meatballs…. Phew!
