The closest trail network to Driggs, Idaho is Horseshoe Canyon and we rode there on a storm threatening day. The trails are nestled in the foothills of the Big Hole Mountain Range and aren’t technically difficult but are a fun close in option. Our ride was 13.1 miles with 1961′ of climbing.
Immediately out of the gate the biting flies got the better of me as we climbed up through the sagebrush into the trees. The climb up Bovine Bliss is steady but goes by pretty quickly. Shark’s Belly was the next section and very fun as we entered the trees, crossed some streams, and descended. Probation Trail was next and these two trails together were so fun! Tight and twisty through the trees with so much green. I always ride first and it’s an added challenge to be scouting lines, watching for other riders (there were none), and looking for bears (also none).
After a short but good climb up Burgh Trail we hit Cody’s Trail. This trail winds through the heavily forested back side of the Horseshoe Canyon Trail System. Once back in this little canyon, the meadows were open and fast as we hung a left on Sodbuster. Southbound Trail was drastically different than the trails through the canyons and forests. The trail meanders up the side of the mountain in dryer terrain. Even on this cloudy day, big views of the Tetons and the Teton Valley captivated. Channel Lock was our last descent and it switchbacks down with some great berms, rollers, and even jumps.
We beat the storm! Fat raindrops started splattering the windshield as we pulled out of the parking lot.
