There are quite a few lakes in the Island Park/ West Yellowstone area. We road to Sheep Lake, Coffin Lake, and Hebgen Lake. On one of our days off we went from camp to check out Henry Lake. There’s a state park at Henry Lake but we are camped on a back road to it so access is free. It’s a small lake at only about 8 miles and a fisherman I talked to said it was much too warm this time of year to catch anything good.Nevertheless, it’s a pretty lake on the road to Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
Montana Beer
As I mentioned in my post the other day, we floated Henry’s Fork River with a local the other day and even better than that, he brought us some Montana beer! I didn’t take pictures of all of them, but here are a few I did capture.
I really liked Pigs Ass Porter from Harvest Moon Brewery in Belt, Montana. This English Porter is a creamy, smooth, roasted, slightly chocolate tasting beer with a touch of hops in the finish. How did it get the name? After brewing the first batch, the local hog farmer showed up to collect the spent mash and what could be better for fattening pigs?
Madison River Brewing Company makes an extremely tasty Black Ghost Oatmeal Stout. It is very smooth and definitely doesn’t drink like 7.5%. I can drink dark beers year round and the roasty, chocolaty, coffee goodness of this beer had me smiling.
My favorite name was Don’t Give A Shih Tzu IPA from Vizsla Brewing in Havre, MT. This IPA had a good balance of citrus and hops, neither of which was overwhelming. Midas Crush from Map Brewing in Bozeman, MT was also a strong contender. I liked that this almost 7% IPA had little to no bitterness despite being hoppy and it was so refreshing!
Thanks beer fairy!
From my recollection not pictured is my favorite porter: Plum St

And their IPA (Hopzone)
Barley Ridge Nut Brown from Bitterroot Brewing
And one other brown I think…
Prost / Salud / Cheers!
The Plum Street was really good!
