The area around Prospect and Rogue River has a lot of options for gravel road riding. It’s all heavily forested area that is enticing for rides because you get some shade. Derek put together a loop we rode that was 19 miles with 1,589′ of climbing. We rode mountain bikes on this because we incorporated some moto trails that were rough. The best part? A sweet swim hole.
The first couple miles was a tiny ribbon of old pavement that climbed up into the forest. Eventually we turned onto gravel and continued the climb. It was a muggy warm day and we were happy to have all the shade we could get. Moto trails criss cross the mountain and we took a section of route 2 that climbed up even higher. It was in really great shape and we zipped through the trees. Topping out, we connected with our descent which seemingly lasted forever.
Some of these gravel paths don’t get much use and have reverted to almost trails. This downhill was like that. Swoopy and twisty with fast gravel. We stopped to check out some weird trees, snap some pics and continue on down. Earlier in the day we had passed a swimming hole that we just kept thinking about as the day got hotter. Never fear, it was just as refreshingly cool as we’d hoped.
Gravel exploration success.
