Mt Scott in Crater Lake National Park is the highest point in the park at 8,938′. I hiked Garfield Peak a couple days before and I think that’s a harder hike but both are doable. The hike to the peak of Mt. Scott and back is about 4.5 miles round-trip with somewhere around 1500′ of climbing.
We started early-ish and were at the trailhead at about 8:30 which allowed us to have lots of solitude on the way up and the peak to ourselves. It was cool enough for me to wear gloves on the way up and just a long sleeve shirt.
The trail winds around the back side through hemlock, some whitebark pines and a few Shasta red firs. We saw and heard plenty of Clark’s Nutcracker birds as well. Views along the way are pretty sweet because you can see everything up here! After a few switchbacks the full lake comes into view. Mt. Thielson over by Diamond Lake is very striking as well. We hiked up to the lookout and snapped some pictures before heading back down.
