Derek and I tried to do this ride back in June but there was still too much snow on the ground. This time was a success. Our ride was 13 miles with 2118′ of climbing which is quite a bit for such a short route.
Huckleberry Mountain ride starts at Thousand Springs Snowpark on Highway 62. This area is used for snowmobiles in the winter and I guess OHV in the summer but we didn’t see anyone. Our climb up was mostly gravel and it was actively being graded and landslides cleared as we rode up the first part. The route climbs for the first part and then pretty much descends the entire second half though there is a sneaky climb towards the end.
Why ride this? Solitude, wildflowers, massive amounts of forest, and an all around great time in the trees. It is named Huckleberry Mountain for a reason. I’ve never seen so many huckleberry bushes in an area! We were a bit early, give them a couple weeks to ripen more. I do recommend doing this clockwise because the descent is rough with rocks and steeper pitches. It would be much tougher climbing up that. As for bikes, we rode mountain bikes. The downhill would be rough on a gravel bike.
This area is a maze of gravel roads and we have a couple more routes mapped out to try so we’ll be back.
