What better way to spend a Saturday then at Burrofest in downtown Mancos? We actually didn’t take many pictures, but it was a blast.
A couple interesting burro facts: Burros are desert-adapted animals. They originated in North Africa and came to North America with the Spanish Conquistadors and Missionaries. Burros don’t have the undercoat horses have. They also don’t have oil glands in their coat, so they don’t have a smell. The ones we petted were all very docile and sweet.
The main attraction in my opinion, was the burro obstacle course races. In head to head heats two burros would negotiate a couple blocks of obstacles led by their owners. Some were not intimidated by the barriers they had to jump over and some were indeed stubborn. Several had very cute names and costumes. Cookie Dough seemed to be a crowd favorite, though I liked the tiny one called Hamilton.
We sampled a couple beers, wandered the burro art booths, and walked around the festival enjoying small town life. Later in the day we headed up to some friends’ house for dinner. All in all a GREAT DAY!
Summer is here and we are loving it.
