Mormon Lake isn’t really a lake anymore. In fact I think it was last full In the 40s. It’s more of a marshy wetlands now, but still pretty against the backdrop of the San Francisco peaks. We spent a week boondocking in the forest down the highway about 10 minutes and hiked and rode mountain bikes a few times. The lake picture in the gallery below is actually of Ashurst Lake by where we camped.
South from our spot, the Arizona Trail is great! From Horse Lake Trailhead we headed down the trail, across the highway and off through a series of meadows and treed forest sections. We passed an extensive rock wall along the way that you can see in the pics below. This was another out and back ride so you can make it however long you want.
Mormon Lake
One day we made the short drive to Mormon Lake and did a little hike to a viewpoint of Mormon Lake. It’s more like a viewpoint of a marshy field but the hike up through the forest was pleasant. The name of the lake commemorates Mormon settlers who migrated to northern Arizona in the 1870s. Today there is a lodge but it’s hardly a lakefront lodge now. After our hike we continued around the lake to get to the viewpoints along the road. Even if it’s not full or water, it’s still pretty.
