The Arizona Trail in the Mormon Lake area is a mixed bag. North from the Horse Lake Trailhead the trail was an annoyingly rocky double track. I don’t mean rock garden technical riding, just a solid trail of rocks. Derek rode it and I hiked part of it and neither was great. In fact, Derek looped back on Lake Mary Road so that he didn’t have to endure more time bouncing around on the rocks. That did, however, give him the opportunity to snap some pictures of the Lake.
From the Gooseberry Springs Trailhead we road the AZT towards Mormon lake another day. I liked this section. It starts on a railroad grade and then dips into and out of the pine and fir forest with some rocky bits thrown in for fun. It isn’t very strenuous unless you aren’t used to altitude since the trail is around 7600′. Again, we rode out and turned around and came back. You pick the distance.
Our time in the area is up and we’ll move on. What’s next?
