Our two week boondocking spot in Greer, Arizona is the highest campspot of the year for us. We’re way up in the White Mountains at 9300′! A lot of people probably don’t realize this part of Arizona exists. Our spot is surrounded by spruce, pine, and aspen trees.
Pole Knoll Trails are a few minutes away and we put together a loop on paper that didn’t quite work out in person. The trails look like they are primarily used for hiking and then in the winter, cross country skiing. The trail system loops through a mix of alpine meadows, pine forests and aspen-fir groves. Some of the trails are fairly rocky and would be a challenge for most mountain bikers but you can always walk those sections. We climbed up really pretty singletrack for a viewpoint of the Sunrise Ski Mountain across the meadow, and then continued around through thick forest.
The idea was to ride all the trails on this knoll and then connect to a separate network. To do that, we rode Elk Trail, which was a feint trail that cut across the mountain and had a few downed trees. When we popped out onto a dirt road , the sign pointed to a trail that supposedly kept going across the meadow. I looked and looked and there was no trail. Nothing. Just a rocky field with tall grasses. Hmmm. I guess that trail doesn’t exists except maybe in winter? So we scratched that plan and added on some other exploring double track trails. We finished up on Meadowlark trail which is a rarely used double track trail through the forest and featured yet more meadows.
