After a couple days of cool temps and rain, we tackled the trails for a hike in Sabino Recreation Area. There are a lot of different hike options in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. Our National Parks pass also gets us in this area so the normal $8 day use doesn’t apply to us. From there you have to decide if you’re going to an extra $12! for the tram that takes you back up into the canyon, or hike from the visitors center. You can not drive into this park. The only way is by foot or tram (or bike if it’s before 9:00 am).
We started from the visitors center and hiked a little over 5 miles on a loop that went up Phoneline Trail to so awesome mountain views, then back down and across the stream for more desert hiking. The Phoneline Trail is rocky in sections where you are walking up rocky stairs or along giant rock slabs. After rounding a couple corners the view opens up and is pretty spectacular. This is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike so you won’t be alone if you come on a weekend. We were here during the week and still saw a few groups of people on the trail.
